Geographic Information Systems

Every international cooperation project aims at meaningful impact and applies different methodologies to assess progress. However, in many contexts, statistically significant changes are hard to detect by conventional methods as on-site visits or video documentations are work- and cost-intensive and require time.

Satellite insights: Innovate remote sensing for impact assessment

We pioneered a  raster data methodology for assessing the impact of water spreading weirs (WSW) installed by local communities along the riverbeds to improve water availability and vegetation quality. Our analysis integrates vegetation indices and applies tests to identify significant trends in environmental changes achieved with WSWs over time. These findings are systematically with control group data, ensuring robust and reliable results.

Making spatial analysis accessible and user-friendly

To make GIS methodology accessible, an open-source QGIS plugin was with a user-centric design approach. It offers a customizable interface that allows stakeholders to select vegetation indices, apply the analysis, and generate detailed reports highlighting significant changes. The plugin ensures adaptability to diverse technical capacities and offline functionality, making it effective in remote or underserved areas. Publicly available Sentinel and Landsat data are acquired for specific time frames and processed for a region of interest through an intuitive and customisable user interface.

Gain deeper spatial insights: Leverage satellite data to analyze environmental changes with precision and scientific rigor.

Make evidence-based decisions: Inform decision-making with high-quality, spatially explicit data collected over time from different data sources.

Empower local stakeholders: Develop technical capacity with practical trainings and robust monitoring of learning outcomes to ensure effective application.
